Russia furious with EU over Iran sanctions
Russia has slammed unilateral measures against Iran by the European Union (EU) and the United States following the recent United Nations Security Council (UNSC) vote for a fourth round of sanctions against Tehran.
Russia's envoy to the European Union Vladimir Chizhov on Friday took exception to last week's decision by the EU and the United States to impose sanctions that targeted Iran's oil and gas industry.
“We do not support them. We think they are totally wrong in substance and in tactics,” Mr. Chizhov told reporters in Brussels. “If you want to dissuade Iran from pursuing a nuclear programme ... then why the hell are you banning the supply of equipment for the oil and gas industry?” he asked. He pointed out that latest sanctions imposed by the UNSC are “clever”, but the follow-on measures by the EU “are not”.
On June 17, EU approved sanctions which bar technology transfers to Iran's giant oil and gas industry, especially the fields of oil refining and liquefied natural gas. On its part, the U.S. Congress on Thursday passed a bill that bars access to the U.S. market to international companies providing refined oil products to Iran.
Mr. Chizhov warned that Moscow would reject unilateral sanctions which affected Russian companies having ties with Iran. “We will certainly not accept any infringement of the rights and of the activities of Russian companies on the basis of those unilateral decisions,” he said. He added that unilateral measures would also hit Russia's cooperation with the EU on the Iranian nuclear issue. “That will certainly depend on the degree to which the EU will be taking into consideration our sensitivities regarding the interests of Russian companies involved,” Mr. Chizhov observed.
Russia has so far maintained that it would continue on-going work with Iran on the Bushehr atomic power plant which is expected to be ready this summer. The Russian energy monolith, Gazprom has also established stakes in the Iranian oil and gas industry.
In the wake of the spat between the Russians and their western counterparts on energy sanctions, the Iranians have said that in the next two years, they would be in a position to nullify all international measures targeting their oil and gas industry.
“The more Americans and Europeans sanction us, the closer it takes us to self-sufficiency,” Fars news agency quoted Ali Reza Zeighami, the head of National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company, as saying.
“Despite sanctions, in two years' time we will be self-sufficient in providing petrol, and two years after that we will be able to be a petrol exporter,” Mr. Zeighami asserted.

Opposition protest against fuel price hike
Most vehicles stay off the road in West Bengal, Kerala
Opposition parties on Saturday hit the streets in many States enforcing strikes in Kerala, Orissa and West Bengal, in protest against the government's decision to hike fuel prices and warned of more agitation unless there was a rollback.
Protests were also staged in Andhra Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh among other states.
In Mumbai, senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde led an agitation of party workers protesting the price hike. The BJP also staged protests in Jammu and Kashmir and Chandigarh.
In Orissa, BJD, BJP, NCP and CPI members sought a resolution on the price hike in the assembly.
The BJP hit the streets in Uttar Pradesh to protest the hike. In Lucknow, after a dharna, party leaders and workers attempted to march towards Vidhan Bhavan, but were intercepted by the police. Agitated party workers attempted to break the cordon and march towards the Vidhan Bhavan, forcing the police to use water cannons.
DESERTED LOOK
Raktima Bose reports from Kolkata:
The city wore a deserted look on Saturday as public vehicles went off the road in response to a 24-hour-long transport strike called by the Centre of Indian Trade Unions, the labour arm of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), in protest against the hike.
Most of the buses, taxi and auto-rickshaws stayed off the road, here and in the districts, forcing the daily commuters to either walk to their destinations or pay extra fare demanded by the few taxis and auto-rickshaws that plied. Being a weekend many offices were anyway closed.
NORMAL LIFE HIT
Thiruvananthapuram Special Correspondent reports:
The 12-hour hartal called by the ruling Left Democratic Front in protest against the fuel price hike brought life to a halt in Kerala on Saturday. There was no major incident. Public carriages stayed off the road and most government offices and private establishments had a virtual holiday. All major markets and educational institutions remained closed.

‘Barcelona keen to clinch Villa deal before WC’
Barcelona are keen to clinch the signing of David Villa from Valencia before the World Cup finals, according to reports in the Spanish media on Tuesday.
Madrid sports daily Marca claimed on Tuesday that Barca president Joan Laporta wants the signing of Villa to be his “farewell present” to the Barca fans.
Laporta will step down as president in June after seven largely successful years in charge.
Marca went on to suggest that Laporta intends to present Villa to the media as a Barca player on May 19, after paying Valencia around 35 million euros (45.18 million dollars) for the Euro 2008 top scorer.
Catalan paper Sport said Valencia want 40 million euros for Villa, and will not accept Barca players in part payment.
Villa, 28, was close to signing for Barca in 2009 and for Real Madrid in 2008.
Bernd Schuster, who was coach of Real in 2008, controversially claimed in March that Real captain Raul and other senior players vetoed the signing of Villa two years ago.
Parties, travelling during IPL took a toll on fitness: Dhoni
India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni refused to blame the IPL for the team’s Twenty20 World Cup debacle but conceded that after-match parties and hectic travelling during the glitzy league did take a toll on the players’ fitness.
“Most of the players were fit and fresh. Players also need to be smart, not only about cricket but about other things going around in the IPL. We have to respect your body and give some time for it to recover because there is more to it than playing matches. Attending parties and travelling takes a toll,” Dhoni said after India’s five-wicket loss against Sri Lanka yesterday that knocked them out of the event.
The defeat was also India’s third successive in the Super Eights stage, a disappointing low for the inaugural champions.
Dhoni said the six-week-long IPL was in itself not responsible for the debacle. “Our performance does not have anything to do with IPL,” said Dhoni.
“I wouldn’t say the IPL was a set back for our preparation. In fact, it has helped us in match preparation for the World Cup. It has thrown up players like (Suresh) Raina, Rohit (Sharma), (Ravindra) Jadeja, (Pragyan) Ohja and (Amit) Mishra. It has groomed a lot of talent.”
Dhoni rejected criticism of the team and said he is least affected by what is said about it.
“As Far as the sloganeering goes, I am not bothered about that. We try and do our best. We play for our country and we are more respectful to our country than those who do these sort of things. They can do whatever they want to,” fumed Dhoni.
He said Indian had done their best although the results have not been too good.
“Whenever we go out there we try to do well. But you won’t do well every time. We tried our best and did whatever we could have, but we still ended up being on the losing side,” said a despondent Dhoni.
The wicketkeeper-batsman commended the Sri Lankans for their all-round show yesterday.
“They batted really well in the end overs. Also, they bowled very well after the 13th over and made it difficult for us to score.
“They were looking to bowl yorkers and to keep the ball outside off stump. You can’t do much when someone bowls perfect yorkers. Me and Raina were out there in the middle. It was really tough. But we were looking to slog everything thing,” he said.
Dhoni said he did not regret batting first yesterday. “I don’t really regret batting first. If we had chased 150 batting second, it would not have been less than 10 runs an over which is tough. Defending 163 was difficult. We fell short by a few runs. Had we scored 180 or more, the target would have been 160-170 and that would have been a good target to defend,” said Dhoni.
Dhoni said this was the best Twenty20 side that India could field.
“We are not performing to our potential. I can’t say why. But at the end of the day this is the best T20 side we have. It gets tough without players like Virender (Sehwag), Zaheer Khan (he suffered a blow on the right thumb) and Praveen Kumar,” he said.
Asked if the Indians’ vulnerability to the rising ball proved to be their downfall, Dhoni said, “I can’t comment on that as you really can’t stretch a tournament for too long. It required a bit of adaptation as we have played in similar conditions quite often. I can’t say the wicket was such and we didn’t perform well.”
He said Indian batsmen had technical problem when it came to playing the short ball.
“Most of us have the problem of playing short pitched balls. So it is not just the youngsters who had problems. We can’t neglect it any more. But we don’t have bowlers who consistently at 145-50 kph and most of wickets in India don’t have that kind of bounce,” he said.
“But we should also remember we are good players of spin. So we shouldn’t be ashamed that we can’t play short-pitch bowling. We have to play even against short-pitch but we can’t be ducking and leaving all the time in Twenty20,” he added.
On whether he was feeling the pressure of captaincy, Dhoni said, “You are always under pressure when you play for India. It is part and parcel of the game. I have not played any game till now when there is no pressure.”
Notwithstanding the debacle in the World Cup, Dhoni said he had faith in his side.
“I have a side with lot of potential to do well, wherever we play. We had two or three poor tournaments. But other than that we have been consistent,” said Dhoni.
Justice Kapadia sworn in as Chief Justice of India
Justice S H Kapadia, the senior most judge of the Supreme Court, was on Wednesday sworn in as the 38th Chief Justice of India by President Pratibha Patil.
The swearing-in of 62-year-old Justice Kapadia at Rashtrapati Bhawan was attended among others by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, his cabinet colleagues, outgoing Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan and other dignitaries.
Justice Kapadia, who wants all judges to keep themselves abreast with commercial laws, would remain at the helm of Indian Judiciary till September 29, 2012.
He was associated with a historical judgement in which a five-judge Constitutional Bench had held that the law put in the Ninth Schedule was open for judicial review.
Justice Kapadia’s deep knowledge on wide ranging issues, particularly tax laws, has earned him accolades from the bench and the bar in equal measure.
The judge, who is known for maintaining strict judicial discipline, assumes the office at a crucial time when Indian judiciary is hit by a corruption controversy and perceived failure of in-house mechanism on appointment and elevation of judges.
For the judge, who during his tenure in the apex court since December 18, 2003 has been associated with 771 judgements, his 28-month term as the CJI would be a challenging one against the backdrop of the need to reducing the mounting pendency of the cases not only in the top court but in high courts and trial courts.
However, the real test for Justice Kapadia would be to take a stand on whether or not the office of CJI comes under the ambit of the Right to Information Act as Justice Balakrishnan had consistently maintained that it has to be kept out of the purview of RTI.
The issue assumes importance as the Delhi High Court had dismissed the stand of Justice Balakrishnan after which the Supreme Court Registry appealed to the apex court.
In a letter to former Supreme Court Judge V R Krishna Iyer on May 3, Justice Kapadia had said the only asset he possesses is integrity and hoped to fulfil the Constitutional obligations to achieve the goal of “inclusive growth.”
“I come from a poor family. I started my career as a class IV employee and the only asset I possess is integrity”, he had said.
Justice Kapadia had said, “Even as a judge of the Supreme Court, I have used my knowledge of accounts and economics for the welfare of the downtrodden including tribals and workmen...
”... I hope to fulfil my obligation to the Constitution in the matter of achieving the goal of inclusive growth”, he had said in his letter, replying to a congratulatory message from Justice Iyer following his new appointment as CJI.

Massive hunt launched to nab Dantewada masterminds
A massive manhunt has been launched to nab the Naxal leaders behind the Dantewada massacre, as investigations into the worst-ever Maoist attack showed that the ultras had used light machine guns (LMGs) to kill 76 CRPF personnel.
Sources in the team conducting the investigations said a survey of site of the attack showed that two LMGs had been used by the Naxals - who were mainly from Company 3 and Company 8 of the Maoists Central Committee and led by Hidma and Papa Rao.
The LMGs might have been stolen from police forces in Andhra Pradesh or Orissa, the sources said.
Meanwhile, a massive manhunt has been launched to nab the red rebels, including their leaders, involved in the gruesome killing for which three names - Papa Rao, Ramana and Hidma - have emerged as prime suspects.
Born in Andhra Pradesh’s Warangal district, 50-year-old Rao, a general Secretary of Maoists’ Jagarbandhu area committee, is known to be the right hand man of Ramana, the Special General Secretary of Dandakarnya region. 75 CRPF men and a state police personnel were killed in the country’s worst-ever Maoist attack in Chattisgarh.
Dandakaranya is the forest tract in the country’s central-southern region covering parts of Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra where the banned CPI (Maoist) virtually run a parallel government envisioning a “liberated” zone.
50-year-old Ramana hails from Warangal area, once the hotbed of Naxalites, and has been active in Dantewada region for long. He has been involved in many strikes on security forces.
According to investigations, the sources said the name of one “Hidma”, military advisor to the Jagarbandhu area committee, has also cropped up during investigations into the gory incident.

Punchline: it's a classic!
Genre: Romance
Type: Straight
Banner: Indira Productions
Cast: Naga Chaitanya, Samantha, Krishnudu, Sanjay Swaroop, Surekha Vani
Cinematography: Manoj Paramahamsa
Editing: Anthony
Lyrics: Anant Sreeram
Dialogues: Anuradha
Story - screenplay - director: Gowtam Vasudev Menon
Producer: Sanjay Swaroop
Release date: 26 February 2010
Karthik (Naga Chaitanya) is an engineering graduate who wants to pursue his career as a film director. Samantha is his neighbour and he falls in love with her at the very first sight. But there are two catches. One is that she is elder to him and the bigger hitch is that she is a Malayali Christian. He proposes to her and she slowly falls for his guts and his perseverance. Her strict father comes to know about it and settles her marriage. She loves him, but can’t hurt her entire family by marrying him. The rest of the story is all about how Karthik achieves his passion to become a film director and tastes success at the personal front.
Artists Performance
Naga Chaitanya: Naga Chaitanya is extremely natural in the role of Karthik. It is basically a conversational film with too many tight close-ups. It takes real confidence and acting prowess to do such scenes in an authoritative manner. Naga Chaitanya proves that he is a brilliant actor with his performance in this movie. His dialogue delivery and body language is highly authentic. You are not going to believe that this is his second film after watching his performance. It’s a top notch effort from him and he will do wonders in the future.
Samantha: Samantha’s debut is one of the best heroine debuts in Telugu cinema. This dusky beauty is highly charming and she is cool in acting as well. The minute expressions she gave spoke volumes about her. Lots of credit should go to director for etching her beautiful characterization. I absolutely loved the voice of the artist who dubbed her. She is the same one who dubbed the voice of Sameera Reddy in ‘Surya s/o Krishnan’. It’s husky and contemporary.
Others: Krishnudu is very good as hero’s friend. Sanjay Swaroop (producer and husband of Manjula) did the role of hero’s father and he suited it well. Puri Jagan played as himself for a few scenes. Trisha and Simbhu (who acted in the Tamil version of the same) did a cameo. All other actors are cast appropriately. Surekha Vani is very good.
Technical departments
Story: Men are simple and women are complex. When it comes to love, man proposes to a woman with plain heart and with no complications. Women, on the other hand make simple things complicated with their complex behaviour. Gowtam Menon has beautifully explored that point and penned a wonderful story of a simple guy who would do anything for love and a complex girl who keeps vacillating about taking decisions.
screenplay - direction: Screenplay of the movie is very good. The movie could end at any point after interval. It needs tremendous narrative skills and screenplay to make people get interested in the second half because the movie can end at the moment hero/heroine converge upon on marriage. I loved the love episodes between Surya and Sameera Reddy (train scene) in Surya s/o of Krishnan and wondered when he is going to make such a story into a full-leangth feature film and Gowtam Menon answered my wish with his next movie by filling it full of magical moments and sweet nothings. It’s a astonishing work by Gowtam Menon. You can’t separate a moment from the movie to be the best. This movie is like a seamless flow of visual poetry.
Other departments: Music by AR Rehman is awesome. Songs are extremely good and background score, rerecording and mixing is perfectly done. All songs are picturized extremely well. Cinematography by Manoj Paramahamsa breath-taking. The choice of locations and camera work blended seamlessly. Dialogues by Anuradha are extremely natural and contemporary. Art direction by Rajeevan is superb. Editing my Anthony is flawless. Production values by Indira Productions are impeccable.
Analysis: I had never seen such a wonderful movie that deals with the straightforward nature of a man and complex nature of a woman so perfectly. Everybody must have gone through these moments in their lives and you are sure to get nostalgic watching some moments in this movie. The entire movie is excellent and extremely engaging except for 10 minutes (in second half from the breakup to the scene where other female proposes him). It takes guts and tremendous conviction makes a movie like Ye Maya Chesave from the director, producer and hero (It was Naga Chaitanya who set this combination up). All three of them should be appreciated for making this movie happen. Ye Maya Chesave movie should do extremely well in multiplexes and A centers. I wish/hope/want this movie to do well in B/C centers as well. This film has all the ingredients for a movie to remain as a timeless classic. Go and watch it!!
