Pak soldier sneaks into India, arrested

A Pakistan Army regular, who sneaked into India, was arrested by security forces in north Kashmir's Kupwara district on Tuesday.

Sarfaraz Ahmed, an infantry man from the Mujahideen brigade, was nabbed by Army personnel near Neel border post, official sources said.

The Army is ascertaining whether Ahmed had some purpose or he simply strayed in the LoC, they said. Army authorities are interrogating him and have not handed him yet to the police, they said.

Telangana bandh: 165 trains, 5,200 buses cancelled

Security has been tightened in Telangana, including Hyderabad, for Wednesday's bandh in support of a separate state. Telangana Rashtriya Samiti (TRS) chief K Chandrasekhar Rao has said he is ready for talks but will not accept any committee to discuss the issue.

Prohibitory orders under Section 144 Cr P C have been clamped across the Telangana region, and thousands of police and para-military personnel have been deployed to maintain law and order. South Central Railways has cancelled 165 suburban and local trains on Wednesday, in view of the bandh. The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) has cancelled 5,200 buses in the region. This will affect 30 lakh passengers and cost the corporation Rs 4 crore in lost revenues today.

On Tuesday, the Congress Core Group - including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and party President Sonia Gandhi - met in Delhi, amidst speculation that a committee could be formed as a way out of the present imbroglio. The TRS chief reacted saying that such a panel would only end up wasting time.

"The Centre should immediately come forward and find a solution. We demand that it sticks to its earlier statement. We are not ready to accept any committees. Except wasting time, these committees serve no purpose," he told reporters, adding, "The patience of Telangana people need not be tested unnecessarily. If Delhi wants to discuss with anyone that is okay. Both regions are ready to come. We have that much patience. We have experts and people with wisdom. We will discuss in Joint Action Committee (JAC) and send our representatives."

The JAC, comprising a number of outfits fighting for Telangana statehood, has called for the shutdown on Wednesday, demanding that the Centre take immediate steps towards a separate Telangana state.

According to Andhra Pradesh's Director General of Police Girish Kumar, the state has suffered losses worth Rs 15 crore in Telangana-related incidents since the agitation began a month ago.

Kotla ODI was rightly called off: Gambhir

Contradicting his home association, star batsman Gautam Gambhir on Tuesday said Match Referee Alan Hurst did the right thing by abandoning the fifth and final India-Sri Lanka ODI because the Feroz shah Kotla track was not fit for an international game.

Even though Delhi and District Cricket Association claimed matches have been played on worse surface than at the Kotla and Hurst should have considered another track that was offered, Gambhir saw logic in Hurst's decision to call off the game.

"I think the Match Referee has done the right thing. He must have given it a serious thought. It was not an ideal wicket for a One-Day International match," Gambhir told reporters after he was signed as the brand ambassador of Seagram's Royal Stag Mega Cricket. (Read: Poor pitch leads to ODI abandonment)

India went into the fateful match with an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match ODI series and the game was abandoned after 23.3 overs because of the dangerous track where balls rose alarmingly.

Dismissing DDCA claims that the match could have carried on, Gambhir said, "The whole world now knows why the match was called off. Had the wicket been alright, there would have been a full match on Sunday.

"This is an embarrassing situation which doesn't happen often and someone has to stand up and take the responsibility," he said.

Gambhir's view was in stark contrast with DDCA vice president Chetan Chauhan's assertion that Sri Lanka actually "chickened out" of the match sensing a defeat and the match officials, including Hurst, did not make an honest effort to carry on with the match. (Read: Dhoni wanted Kotla ODI to continue, says Chauhan)

Following Hurst's negative report, the International Cricket Council has already sought an explanation from BCCI to be furnished in two weeks before it decides on the punishment for the venue, which may lead to a ban of upto two years. (Read: Does Kotla face an 18-month ban?)

Gambhir said but for the Kotla pitch playing spoilsport, India would have ended the year on a winning note.

"It was both embarrassing and disappointing. A 4-1 win would have looked more comprehensive. We wanted to end the year on a high with a win. It would have given us a momentum going into the tri-series in Bangladesh (starting on January 4)," he rued.

ABVP disrupts film shooting of Chiru's nephew

Activists of the Bharatiya Janata Party's students wing Wednesday, extending support to the separate Telangana state demand, disrupted the shooting of a Telugu film of actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi's nephew Allu Arjun at Anajpur near here, police said.

Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists attacked the shooting unit of Varudu and damaged its equipment near Ramoji Film City on the city outskirts.

No one was injured in the incident. Eyewitnesses said Allu Arjun and other artists had to run for safety.

The attackers, who were holding ABVP flags and raising slogans of 'Jai Telangana', escaped after police arrived on the scene.

Allu Arjun is son of famous producer Allu Aravind, brother-in-law of superstar Chiranjeevi.

For the second consecutive day, relatives of Telugu film personalities opposing the proposed formation of Telangana state faced the ire of pro-Telangana groups.

Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) activists had Tuesday disrupted the shooting of a film of actor Manchu Manoj, son of veteran actor Mohan Babu. Manoj, his sister Lakshmi Parsanna and other artists of the yet to be named film had to run for cover.

The TRS workers were protesting Mohan Babu's remarks opposing the proposed division of the state.
Chiranjeevi, who is the president of the Praja Rajyam Party (PRP), is campaigning for 'united Andhra'. TRS and other groups have already stopped screening of films of Chiranjeevi's son Ram Charan Tejan, nephew Allu Arju and other family members and also those of Mohan Babu.

Mohan Babu, along with his family members, Wednesday met Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K. Rosaiah and sought security for the film industry. He also sought permission to hold a peace rally in Hyderabad. "The chief minister advised me to wait for two days," he told reporters.

The veteran actor said his supporters would lodge complaints at various police stations against TRS chief K. Chandrasekhara Rao for making provocative statements. He criticised Rao's warning to film personalities to confine themselves to movies and not meddle in politics.

Mohan Babu, who is also a former parliamentarian, asked all film personalities to speak out on the Telangana issue and claimed that a majority of them were for a unified state

Telugu actor N Venkateswara Rao dies

Popular Telugu film actor Narra Venkateswara Rao died. He was 62.

Rao, who had been suffering from cancer, died at his residence in the early hours today, family sources said.

Rao, who became popular with his negative roles in films like 'Neti Bharatam', acted in over 450 films.

Several film personalities condoled the actor's death and paid homage to him.

His funeral was held at his native village Agraharam in Prakasam district, the sources added.

Big B's 13-minute scene in one take

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who has perfected the art of acting, went a step further this time while shooting for his upcoming movie Rann, when he completed a 13-minute-long scene in a single take, flooring the film unit and crew present there.

According to sources, the actor shot the 13-minute monologue, perhaps the longest his career, in one take.

"It was instantly done in the first take itself. The crew was astonished and claps were heard much after the scene was over," sources said.

They also recalled an intense scene shot by the actor in the RGV movie, where Bachchan could not help but feel the pain of the character and his eyes welled up with tears.

Also, he always insists that Hindi dialogues be written in Devnagiri script, they said.

The Bollywood icon plays Vijay Harshvardhan Malik, a media baron in the film which is a take on the functioning of the media.

Rann releases on January 22, 2010.

Tiwari 'lands' in more trouble

Breaking his silence, former Andhra Pradesh Governor N D Tiwari, who resigned after an alleged sex scandal, has said the accusations against him are "fabricated and false".

Now there's more trouble for him in his hometown Dehradun. He's being accused of handing out prime land at throwaway prices while he was Chief Minster.

Leading NGOs plan to move high court against him. They allege he gave prime land at 3 industrial estates to top industrialists at throwaway prices. There are allegations Tiwari distributed ministerial-level posts to nearly 300 politicians and also allegedly misused the chief minister's fund.

The BJP government is probing allocation of 76 government horticulture gardens free of cost.

It's going to be a long lonely road ahead for Tiwari who has been chief minister of undivided UP thrice, but now finds himself all alone.

Telangana politics mean bad business?

The political crisis in Andhra Pradesh is hurting business. Chief Minister K Roasaiah went public on Tuesday evening to share that hotels and tourism are flooded with cancellations.

For more than a month, bandhs and violent protests have been a daily feature of the battle over a new Telangana state. Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema are firmly opposed to this move, sanctioned by the union government in early December. After mass resignations by MLAs from non-Telangana regions, the Centre made it clear last month that a new state will not be created in a hurry. Now, it's pro-Telangana politicians and student groups at Osmania University that are calling the shots. They've warned of an indefinite bandh if the government does not commit to a schedule for the new Telangana state.

For Rosaiah and the ruling Congress government, the nightmare gets worse every day. Close to 13 ministers from Telangana threatened to boycott a cabinet meeting scheduled for Wednesday, forcing the chief minister to postpone it.

The union government has promised Telangana MPs and MLAs "good news" soon - words used by Finance Minister, Pranab Mukherjee earlier this week.

One of the biggest points of conflict over the new Telangana state is Hyderabad and its booming economy. Telangana activists say they will not accept a new state without Hyderabad as its capital. Non-Telangana regions are bitterly opposed to this. At stake is crores of rupees invested in Hyderabad by IT and other firms.

FASTING STUDENTS ARE REMOVED FROM UNIV

Seven students of Osmania an indefinite hunger strike in support of statehood for Telangana, were forcibly shifted to hospital by the police on Monday, as their condition had become a matter of concern.

A large number of slogan-shouting students put up stiff resistance as the police shifted the students to the Gandhi government hospital. The students have been fasting at the University's Arts College. Another group of fasting students had been shifted to hospital late on Sunday night.

At Osmania, students want to hold a huge public meeting with an estimated five lakh attendees on January 3. The police say they have not sanctioned this meeting. That's becoming a new point of conflict on campus.

The campus has been the epicentre of pro-Telangana protests for the last four weeks.

Last week, students attacked visiting politicians with chappals. The men targeted from Chandrababu Naidu's Telugu Desam Party (TDP) are among 60 MLAs who've resigned from the Andhra Assembly to protest against the Centre's new go-slow policy on the formation of a new Telangana state.

However, students were upset with the TDP because Naidu had not expressed his support for a Telangana state. Students later apologised for the attack on the TDP leaders, claiming that anti-social elements had infiltrated the campus and had in fact, led the attack on the politicians.

K Chandrasekhar Rao, or KCR, along with pro-Telangana politicians and student groups, has formed the Telangana Joint Action Committee. KCR has warned that he will start an indefinite bandh in Telangana on Tuesday if the Centre does not commit to a schedule for the formation of the new state it sanctioned earlier this month.

The gigantic whiplash from MLAs from the non-Telangana regions of Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema forced the Centre to share last week that it will move very slowly and cautiously on the issue. KCR and others have warned the Centre not to reverse its decision to allow a new state.

NEW GOVERNOR stepping into seat of old governor

E S L Narsimhan, Governor of Chhattisgarh who was given additional charge of Andhra Pradesh following the resignation of ND Tiwari over alleged sex tapes, has been sworn in as the new Governor of the state.

Narsimhan took oath on Monday.

N D Tiwari, who had resigned as Governor following a controversy after a sting operation showed him in a compromising position with three women, will head to Dehradun on Monday.

Delhi's Kotla will not host Test against South Africa

After the embarrassing pitch fiasco on Sunday, Delhi's Feroz Shah Kotla ground has lost out on hosting a Test match between India and South Africa early next year.

The South Africa-India series will be held in February and March next year. Though the list of venues had not been announced yet, Kotla was in contention to host one of the two Test matches to be played during the series.

However, Ratnakar Shetty of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has said that it has been decided that the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) will not get to host this match after the fiasco.

A two-member inquiry committee is also being set up to look into the Kotla pitch mess-up. (In Pics: Kotla ODI abandoned)

On Sunday, the nation watched stunned as the fifth One-Day International between Sri Lanka and India was abandoned after 23.3 overs had been bowled with the guests complaining that the pitch was dangerous. What made it worse was that this was the national capital. Irate spectators turned violent at the ground and the entire DDCA pitch committee resigned later in the day. (Read: Poor Kotla pitch leads to ODI abandonment)

International Cricket Council (ICC) vice president Sharad Pawar has also spoken out on the issue saying it's the ground and pitch that matter the most, not a fancy stadium.

After the ICC receives the match referee's full report on the incident, it will write to the BCCI within five days demanding an explanation for the incident.

The BCCI will have 14 days to respond to the ICC. If ICC decides the pitch was sub-standard, penalties can range from a warning to a fine or suspension.

Match Referee Alan Hurst had issued a statement after the match was abandoned on Sunday. He said:

"The decision to abandon the match was taken by myself, in consultation with the on-field umpires Marais Erasmus and Shavir Tarapore, and both captains as it was clear that the pitch had extremely variable bounce and was too dangerous for further play.

"Before abandoning the match, consideration was given to shifting the match to a secondary pitch. However, it was deemed impractical as the secondary pitch was not adequately prepared," Hurst said in his statement.

However, the ICC's chief executive has said Feroz Shah Kotla can still retain hope of hosting the 2011 World Cup matches.

AVATAR review

Synopsis:
The story happens in 22nd century. Human scientists discover that there is another planet called Pandora which contains rich minerals which are quite valuable. The army takes up the mission on going to Pandora and rob the minerals. But there is a problem. There is a sect of na’vis, a humanoid race are inhabitants of Pandora. They are quite tall with blue skin, golden eyes and a supple tile. There is not enough oxygen over there and human beings can’t survive. The scientists invent a new process (kind of Matrix process) of Avatar which makes select human beings look-alike of na’vis and sends them across to Pandora to get more information so that their military attack would be immaculate. Jake (Sam Worthington) is a marine who lost his legs in a warfare. His identical twin brother was groomed to be an Avatar, but dies. The Colonel promises his legs back (an expensive operation) if he cooperates to be an Avatar. After going to Pandora as an Avatar, Jake realises that the sect of na’vis are kind-hearted people who co-exist with the nature. He falls in love with the local princess Neyitiri (Zoe Saldana). Jake has orders to follow, But, he learns that Colonel is destroying good people for the sake of minerals. He decides to save Pandora from humans. The rest of the story is all about how he achieves it!

It transports you into a dream world:
James Cameron adds his tremendous creativity into imaginative 3D and VFX technology and shows us how passion for movies can create path-breaking movies like Avatar. The 3D effect, visual effects and the colors transport you into a new dream world you had never imagined. Avatar is supposed to be an alien movie and aliens are supposed to be unfamiliar (that’s why they are called aliens). The na’vis in this movie are excellent and they are familiar despite of blue skin, golden eyes and long tail. The na’vis bond with various animals and co-exist with them. The Pandora world is pleasant with its colors and is easy on eyes. The night vision of Pandora is a visual feast with pleasing florescence colors. There are floating mountains, flying dragons with butterfly colors, flies that look like jelly-fishes etc. The big tree is amazing.

Story with humanity and lots of moral values:
We see the story taking backseat in most of the technical extravaganzas. But Cameron made sure that he gives equal preference to storytelling in Avatar.

This film shows the greed of certain human beings who stop at nothing to achieve money/power. This film also shows the humanity of certain human beings who are willing to sacrifice everything to stop the destruction. Avatar is an eco-friendly movie.

A beautiful love story:
Princess of Pandora falling in love with a stranger from another place is an age-old and commercially successful formula. James Cameron has taken the magnificent canvas of the universe to narrate this love story.

Pranab promises good news on Telangana?

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has reportedly promised "some good news" on Telangana and asked his party's ministers from that region in Andhra Pradesh to withdraw their resignations.

"Pranab Mukherjee asked us to withdraw our resignations and assured us that there will be good news on Telangana issue in the near future," State Information and Tourism Minister Geeta Reddy said after meeting with Mukherjee on Sunday.

Reddy had led a delegation of 13 ministers who have quit in protest against the Centre putting Telangana statehood on the backburner.

The ministers were not in an immediate mood to relent. "We will discuss it (request to withdraw resignations) among ourselves. Our aim is not being in posts of power, but meeting the expectations of the people of Telangana. Their aspiration is to have a separate state. This is the right time to have Telangana," Reddy said.

"We have requested Pranab Mukherjee to clear the doubts over the issue of separate statehood, created after Home Minister P Chidambaram's statement on December 23. It gave an impression that Telangana was taking a backseat," said Water Resources Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah.

Andhra Pradesh Governor Tiwari quits after alleged sex scandal

Veteran Congress leader N D Tiwari resigned as Governor of Andhra Pradesh on Saturday, after an expose allegedly showed him in compromising positions with girls at Raj Bhavan.

Tiwairi's party has welcomed his resignation, which President Pratibha Patil has forwarded to the Central government. However, Tiwari has cited health reasons for quitting.

The incident had raised a stink, with Opposition parties demanding he be immediately sacked. CPM leader Brinda Karat had written to President Pratibha Patil demanding that if Tiwari doesn't quit, he should be recalled.

After the matter was reported, the Chief Secretary of the state was instructed to send a report to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs on Tiwari's alleged involvement in the sex scandal. Home Ministry will decide on the next course of action after receiving the report.

Meanwhile, sources in the Congress party say the party is very embarrassed by the sting operation showing on one of its Governors in a compromising position with women. The sex scandal has already got the Opposition up in its feet demanding N D Tiwari's scalp.

Women groups are now demanding Governor Narayan Dutt Tiwari's ouster from Raj Bhavan in Hyderabad. This after a private Telugu channel aired photographs that allegedly showed Tiwari in a compromising position with several girls, who the channel claimed worked at Raj Bhavan.

After a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), the Andhra Pradesh High court asked the channel to stop telecast of the visuals. Raj Bhavan said the TV programme was 'fabricated, false and malicious', aimed at tarnishing the image of the Governor.

"He degraded it. It is not we. It is the Governor who has to answer for being involved in such acts," said A Radhakrishna, Editor, Andhra Jyoti.

The Opposition has demanded that Tiwari be sacked.

"Today what they have shown is very bad and everybody should be ashamed of it. I demand that immediately the Governor should resign or otherwise the Government of India should sack him," said Chandrababu Naidu, Leader of the Opposition.

The government was reluctant to react.

When NDTV asked Andhra Home Minister Sabitha Indra Reddy about the incident she slammed the door of her car.

The expose comes at a time when there is speculation on whether the state will come under President's rule and on whether a new incumbent will occupy Raj Bhavan.
